Re: [IBWiFi] WiFi Routers, Access Points and USB/PC Cards

Gordon

I generally get my "performance ratings" from magazines like PC World and
the like. They periodically test new routers and give relative performance
info.

When I first got started with WiFi, I had a 2.4 gig wireless phone and a
2.4 gif router. The phone would interfere with the router. I would not be
surprised if a 5.8 Gig phone would interfere with a 5.8 Gig router. I
think there was some info on that in a recent PC World magazine, but I don't
have the details. It was in one of the last two issues. Maybe it's on their
web site.

Some of our members may have additional or better info.

RE USB modems, I use the USB 720. We have a "sister group", IBDC for
Internet by Data Card and they can address that topic. You can check them out
here:

My basic understanding is that most of the devices are fairly equivalent,
and the bigger factor is the strength/quality of the cell signal you
receive.

Hi Folks!

I am wondering if anyone has done a comparison of the coverage of various
2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz routers, access points and USB/PC cards of the typical
consumer variety that one would find in various electronic and office
supply
stores around the country?

I am mostly interested in the 2.4 GHz and don't mind modifying them for an
external antenna port to either drive an antenna or a 500mW/18 db Hawking
bi-directional amplifier. The goal is RANGE! I see all sorts of claims by
vendors of the N routers, but am not sure what they are referencing when
staking their claims.

In short, what's best in this price range and vendor type? Finally, what
are MUCH better examples of equipment with a modest increase in cost and a
perhaps a more "boutique" choice of vendor?

On a separate note, I have some Panasonic 5.8 GHz phones and am curious if
folks have had interference between them and the 5.8 GHz WiFi systems?

Thanks & 73,
