FWIW when there is dead time on a list
side traffic is not a burden to me. I also found the information useful
and at the same time know that too much off topic posting will drive
people away but on the other side of the coin overmoderation has killed
more lists than it's saved.

Re: [IBWiFi] WiFi in the Southwest

Thanks for the local information, Jon. it doesn't sound like campers are in too much danger. Where is your home base? A neighbor just returned from a business trip to southern Arizona (Bisbee area). He says locals were advising him to avoid driving down isolated unmarked roads which could turn out to be drug stash areas. That seeems to imply Organ Pipe Cactus NM would be OK. We are coming from northern Virginia and will be leaving in early May.

If you are camping at a Casino do you have access to wifi? I can highly recommend the Alfa AWUS036H 1000 MW USB wifi adapter. It can be had on the internet for $40 new (I think from Rockland). It has a detachable antenna so could be used with parabolic dishes, but even without an extra reflector it can pick up nearly 40 APs in my development (some from blocks away). This particular Alfa (has to be this exact one) presently is the preferred adapter by wardrivers, crackers, and those wanting long distance. In my limited tests it makes even newer laptop wifi receivers and all those available at WalMart and Sams look like toys.

Re: [IBWiFi] nanostation

Where are you located?
When are you coming to the southwest?

Regarding the border and problems.
We have been camping within 3-5 miles of the border just west of the
Arizona/California border in the wintertime for about ten years. My spouses
favorite pass time was watching the border patrol with binoculars, roundup
illegals every morning. We have had them come down a wash behind a group of
Escapee Boondockers and nobody except my spouse saw them parade by each
carrying a gallon bottle of water in each hand. Due to increased
surveillance in the past couple of years the traffic has been reduced.
The area around the Organ Pipe is very isolated and spacious. I am sure
that there are illegals and drug activities there but, lets face it, they
want to avoid detection and for the most part are not trying to make contact
with anyone.
Safety in numbers is an oxymoron. No such thing. When you have a bunch of
people around, they all THINK that they are really safe but, nothing could
be further from the truth as NONE of THEM is prepared for an EVENT.

Safety is a personal, policy and procedure situation. You, are responsible
for your self and your family. One should be familiar with situational
awareness and adequate preparation and preparedness. The Feds have recently
passed a law allowing the carrying of concealed firearms on National Park,
National Monument grounds and as always, in National Forests. So, no longer
is there a need for you to be defenseless.
To avoid being a victim, one should prepared for any eventuallity and not
just illegals, druggies and perps. There are a lot of other things,
everywhere in this country that can cause one to suffer if one is not
prepared.
Being prepared and being paranoid is the best course of action.

The Casino here in Somerton charges $5 for three days of dry camping. The
local desert costs nothing.
And the desert is much nicer and prettier.

Hello Jon,

We're tentatively planning a trip to the southwest. I've been reading about kidnappings, drug wars, and a murdered DEA agent. Are any danger bells sounding in your mind that close to the border? What would you avoid doing knowing the area? I was reading a writeup about Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the NPS said to avoid making eye contact with the inevitable streams of people coming across the border inside the NM, and of course hide all valuables. WOW! That sounded like it wouldn't take much for things to turn dicey. It irks me when we can't fully use our NPs and NMs. Should we wait for a group trip figuring there's safety in numbers? By the way, how much does it cost to dry camp at the casino?

We are at the Casino, not the Resort. Two different places.
If you Google Earth for Cocopah Casino you should be able to see a parking
lot on the southwest side with a herringbone pattern. That is where we are
parked. It is dry camping only. No facilities.
To be here for a while you need solar, big black and grey tanks and a BIG
freshwater tank. In Dec/Jan it helps to have a big propane tank too.
Decent location and fairly close in to Yuma.
