You don't need WiFi, you need to connect the Internet through your cell
phone. If you have a Verizon cell phone voice contract, you can get
Internet connection through your phone for an additional $50 per month for
up to 5 gigabytes of data. Call and as the "feature" "Mobile Broadband
Connect" be added to your phone account. You must have a fairly recent
phone (at least 1XRTT data capable, preferably "EVDO REV A" capable phone.
You can also get data cards to plug into your computer.
There are two groups you need to join, and search file sections, and recent
messages: They are "InternetByCellPhone" and "InternetByDataCard".

Fred,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I like over-kill, RadioLab recommends
over-kill when buying their equipment, plus even though my brother's house
is close, there are a lot of shade trees in both our yards. So I am not sure
how good a "line of sight" system would be for us. I would rather take my
chances with the RadioLab's "non line-of-sight" system and be safe. In the
winter time with all the leaves off the trees, then no problem. Now? Maybe a
problem?

You are saying "wifi" but are asking about cellular telephone service. It too is "wireless", but it's not the same thing as wifi. Two different things.
Datajack is a cellular service for data, but you can get the same service from your cellular carrier. A cellular data modem will cost you about $60/month.
Ask about cellular modems on the InternetByDataCard group (of which I am the owner).

Do you have a clear line of sight to your brother's house? WiFi works
best that way.
If you do have a clear line of sight, then you should be able to set up an
antenna that will cover the 400'.
Take a look at this product from RadioLabs. It is rated for over 1000'.
And, it's a lot less expensive:

I live in rural area and want to save money by beaming a signal up to my
brother's house that is approx 400' away from me with a few trees in the
way. Think it will work??
thanks,

Your question crosses over into cell phone data. You will find good info
on the Internet by Cell Phone group and also the Internet by Data Card
Group.
The quick answer is "Yes". Most cell service providers sell a cellular
hotspot. It connects automatically to the cell provider's tower and creates
a hotspot that your computer can connect to and then access the Internet.
One example is the Verizon "MiFi" system. I have a friend that uses the
MiFi and it does a good job.

Internet via a cell phone modem is different than wifi. Wifi would require that you add a wifi device to your computer (easy) but you would be piggy-backing on somebody else's network and internet access. A friendly neighbor might agree, for fee or for free.
You may be able to get internet access via your cell phone if it has a built-in modem. Suggest you inquire on the InternetByCellPhone group rather than this one.
