Greg,
You might check into http://www.clearwire.com/
Wireless both ways, no phone line. LA coverage
but you have to enter an address/zip to check for

Paying for service is also the safest way. I use a Verizon data card and a Cradlepoint PHS300 router, a Wilson amp and a yagi antenna. I also have a vertical antenna

greg, you might want to consider Millenicom <http://millenicom.com/> for internet service. i just signed up for this so can't provide you a first-hand review but several folks on one of the Yahoo RV groups i belong to give it high marks. they're running a special for the month of february <http://millenicom.com/page/plans#advanced_plan>. this plan uses the verizon backbone, is limited to 20gb of transfer data and you're not allowed to stay connected to the net for more than 24-hrs at a time. you can cancel the plan at any time as there is no contract period and you don't have to return the device. you can also put the account to 'sleep' for 3-mos out of 12. they have several other plans but this one fits the way we travel. i know you're looking for service at your house and this might be a solution for you.

If you want Internet service in your home, you have to buy the service from
the cable company, or the phone company. These folks will, for a
monthly fee or around $30, provide you with a DSL modem or a cable modem. Most

of the companies now offer a wireless modem that connects to the cable or
phone line and then broadcasts a WiFi signal for you to use. You can put
security on that signal if you wish (strongly recommended).

If you do not to pay for Internet access at your home, then you can pack up
your laptop and go to places like Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, and maybe
your town library who offer free Internet access. This can become "old" in
short order, but there is no cost.

It means you live near several Hot Spots. In this day and age, many, many
folks are putting up their own "hotspot" at home so that everyone in the
home can use a single Internet provider.

I travel in my RV and it is not unusual to turn on the computer and see
anywhere from 3 to 15 hotspots. I have my own hotspot, security protected,
and if someone is traveling with me I can give them the key so they can
also
log on.

People are generally much better educated and now activate the security
measures on their routers, and that is why you get the "locked"
indication.

Do you use a cell phone? We have a sister group, Internnet by Cell Phone
located here:

_http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/InternetByCellPhone/_
(http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/InternetByCellPhone/)

If you have the right cell phone, you can buy a data plan and use the cell
phone to connect to the Internet. The above group can provide details of
that setup.

But if you are looking for totally free access, then you have to make a
friend out of someone within range that will let you use their hotspot, or you
have to take your gear to places that do offer free service as I mentioned
before.

Buying a router doesn't help you - you need to buy (or beg) access to somebody's wifi so they will allow you to connect through it. If you buy a router (aka wireless access point) , you would still have to buy internet access somehow, e.g. cable internet or DSL phone service.

Or buy a USB cell modem with a data service contract and plug that into your Mac.
