Which Mac model did you get? Is it the iMac 21.5" model? If so, what you have built in is Wifi, not cellular, so you need to be near a wifi hotspot to have internet communications.
Pay as you go typically refers to cellular communications plans rather than wifi, but some wifi hotspots are fee rather than free, and can be pay-as-you-go or monthly fee.
I think what you need is a USB modem and a PAYG data plan from somebody like Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, Millenicom or Virgin Mobile. For help on that, go to the Internet By Data Card group (which I happen to own and operate).
