[IBWiFi] Re: campus signal

I have installed yagi antenna's 1 mile apart and they worked and I know of others that have installed parabolic high gain antennas 10 miles apart on high locations. These were antennas specifically made for 2.4 Ghz WiFi.
Two important points: 1) Line of site is imperative and 2) A parabolic or yagi high gain antenna will be needed on campus pointing toward your son's location.

If not, would a ten ft big C-band dish do it? Has anybody tried a ten ft. dish?

Re: [IBWiFi] campus signal

Hi

I believe a dish antenna always increases signal, no matter what kind of RF signal, and of course if you respect all technical requirements to build such antenna.

The problem is that you will need to really point it at the source like a flash light...If you dont you will probabily loose signal. They are very, very directive. I have done experiments with a 6 foot dish antenna here and that is what I found out..

But there is hope...as I type this, my antenna is picking up a access point at almost a mile from my house and Im using about 50 feet of 213 coax cable from the antenna to the WIFI PCI card. on my desktop.

Im now using a high gain grid antenna, that looks like this one, which is also directive but has a fairly wide beamwidth in practice:

http://www.caworldwifi.com/images/P/30dbParabolicGrid_2.4GHz.jpg

and a smaller version here: http://www.rfshop.com.au/Portals/22/Pictures/Puddlenet.JPG

and gives me good results with a 25dBi gain with about 3 feet reflector. None of those home made antennas come even closer.

To greatly improv your system you can also attach a AP in client mode close to the antenna and run down the CAT5 cable, instead of coax cable, which I will do here in the near future (check the pic below) , and then you would have a good setup and internet for all computers in the house, but that is another story.

Re: [IBWiFi] campus signal

As Gary said, check out Cantenna. I n addition, see if you can find any info on mounting a cantenna in place of the LNB on one of the old Priomestar dishes. You may also have to look up Wardriving.

Not a realistic expectation.  A suitable antenna and reflector will extend the usable range of wifi, but the signal is not coming down from the sky like a satellite broadcast so a big dish doesn't really help. Wifi signals are propagating out from the transmitters on campus and any tree, building or vehicle in between the campus and his residence will likely stop the signal.  Now if he lived across a lake from the campus, he might have a chance. Basically you need line of sight to the wifi radio to have a very good chance.

A "cantenna" seems to be as good a reflector/concentrator for wifi as any. Google "cantenna".

Re: [IBWiFi] campus signal

I would talk to the wifi guys at the college and ask them if a parabolic
antenna would help. And I am sure it would.
However, they might just give (for undeclared pizza's) or sell you a
bridge/amplifier to boost your signal and amplify theirs.
I sure think it would be worth a try and few pizza's.
I'll bet a $100 pizza card from Pizza Hut might work wonders......

Hello everyone!! I am new and I have a question I have a Verizon aircard which I love but I was wondering if I could get on line without the air card if I used a High Power USB Wireless Adapter? Would that allow me to connect to surrounding wi fi spots from my home? Thanks. Joyce

Re: [IBWiFi] High Power USB Wireless Adapter

Is that a brand name or just a description of a more powereful wifi?

In any case, IF you can get a wifi signal at your jouse and IF is it open to the public, then the answer is Yes. Some wifi adapters have more powerful radios than others. And some have better antennas than others or even provisions for an external antenna. Any or all of those would improved your chances of getting a usable wifi signal, assuming there are any available in your neighborhood.
