As Gary said, check out Cantenna. I n addition, see if you can find any info on mounting a cantenna in place of the LNB on one of the old Priomestar dishes. You may also have to look up Wardriving.

Not a realistic expectation. A suitable antenna and reflector will extend the usable range of wifi, but the signal is not coming down from the sky like a satellite broadcast so a big dish doesn't really help. Wifi signals are propagating out from the transmitters on campus and any tree, building or vehicle in between the campus and his residence will likely stop the signal. Now if he lived across a lake from the campus, he might have a chance. Basically you need line of sight to the wifi radio to have a very good chance.

A "cantenna" seems to be as good a reflector/concentrator for wifi as any. Google "cantenna".
