many years now. earthlink 1.5 mbps DSL is $49.95 per month. at&t is
offering all distance phone (which we already have @$60 per month) plus 1.5
mbps DSL bundled for $60 per month. they're telling me that is NOT an
introductory rate. seems like a no-brainer in terms of DSL here at the
house. the savings is $600 per year.
we travel 6-mos per year in our motorhome and rely heavily on e-mail and net
access. we've had no trouble accessing earthlink's SMTP and POP servers on
public and campground wi-fi systems but the earthlink mail servers do not
use SSL ports 465 and 995. the at&t tech told me that i *shouldn't* have
any problems but he added that *some* public wifi spots *may* elect to block
SSL traffic on ports 465/995. from the responses i've been getting if it is
a problem it seems to be very rare.
we use our cellphone for backdoor access to the net as a Plan B but it's
rare when we need to.
thanks for your post. it's appreciated.

I've used Gmail for a couple years from locations all over the USA and never
had a problem with SSL. And I download the mail to my own computer (I use
Pocomail, but Outlook Express and others do fine too). If cable or DSL or
cellular wireless, that IS your ISP and you need no other. If you want a
dial-up landline (Ugh!) that's another story.
Whether you need an ISP for home use depends on how to will access the
internet.
