Do you have his modem and router addresses? This is what you will need
if there is an issue. Login and pws will help.

Our home DSL is through Verizon, and they have provided me with a
program, "Vz In-Home Agent," which allows me to re-set and re-boot the
wireless router from my computer. If he's on Verizon, you might be able
to get this. If he's with another provider, they may have something
similar....

My neighbor has agreed to let me use his unsecured WiFi. This is a good

When he is not connected, I usually go to a Hotspot.

What you can do depends on how "tight" you are with your neighbor. If you
are good friends and he wants someone to check the house every few days, he
might give you a key.
When a home hot spot goes down, often it can be restored by rebooting. A
simple matter of turning it off and back on.
For that you need access to his house, and you'd have to work that out with
him.

[IBWiFi] Re: Adding Canada
Heather,
That's interesting; what plan are you on now? I thought it was an "all or nothing" kind of thing. In other words, if you're grandfathered to a plan they no longer offer, you couldn't make any changes and go back, period. Or, if you're on a current plan, changes weren't an issue at any time. Last year, we changed to the "+Canada" plan at the end of May and changed back at the middle of September. Sounds like some rules may have changed in the past year?

[IBWiFi] Adding Canada
I can't change back to what I had unless I do it within 30 days, though.

[IBWiFi] Canada Plan
I called Verizon and the best plan for our trip to Alaska is
to add the 20$ per month plan as we enter Canada. We will
still have our 700 minutes on two phones, but there is no
"free" nights and weekends, and no "free" in calling on
mobile to mobile. Every minute counts!
I checked on availability of Mobile Broadband Connect in
Canada and they charge by the kilobyte! One large Microsoft
update could really fry the bill. I'll turn it off as we
enter Canada, on when we hit Alaska, and then reverse on the
way home.
I will go for WiFi when in Canada, either in campgrounds, or
otherwise. We're in a group though, so I probably won't be
cruising around town looking for hot spots. Maybe I can
befriend a fellow traveler with a Sat dish.
