Re: [IBWiFi] a question about multiple wifi's

Two months ago I was at the Thousand Trails Lake Wilderness Park in CA.
A man knocked on my door and asked if I had a router named Bounder Mike. I
said yes that was me.
In his truck he had a computer with a program to find other routers in the
area. He said that my router was set on channel 10 and was interfering
with their router network. He asked if I would change my router to channel
5 and showed me how to do it.
I had not known that channels can interfere with other channels.

Mike, from PA

----------------------------------------------------------

In theory, any of the channels can be used. In reality, channel selection
should be based on avoiding interference from other channels. M any
manufacturers set their default configuration to channel 6. Therefore,
you'll frequently find that channels 1 and 11 are the only other channels
most likely to avoid interference if there are other WIFI access points in
your area . However, I have seen times where channels 1 and 11 were the most
frequently used channels. This was a bit unusual, but in this case , using
channel 6 provided the *least* amount of interference. You'll most likely
encounter this in a high-density living situation - like a multi-story
apartment building where there may be 5-20+ access points within range . As
always - YMMV.

Hi Michelle,

You're very welcome.

If at some point in the future you sense your perfomance has dropped, use inssider to see if there are now more APs, signal strengths have changed, or if others have changed their channels. Adjust your channel as necessary for best performance.

Glad it's worked out well.

Hi Ken,

I just set the Cradlepoint to automatic channel select and it went to channel 11
right on top of someone else's so I set it back to channel 1 and will use inSSIDer
from now on to choose my channel.
Thank you so much,

Hi Michelle,
If everyone's access points (AP) are manually configured, it looks like the people tried to configure their AP to be on a different channel, which is best to do. Since all of the 3 channels are 'in use', you could either put your AP in Auto and see what channel the unit selects. If it is able to automatically select the channel that provides the best performance on-the-fly, then I'd leave it there. If you see that this is not true, then it's a balancing act between the channel that has the fewest 'users' and the channel that has the weakest signal strength of the strongest for each channel. What you're trying to do is find a channel where your AP has the least amount of interference from other APs.
hth,
Ken

6 or 11 their's would move? Do you know?

Hi Michelle,

Glad you found insidder valuable. For a better understanding of how 802.11b/g uses the channels and their corresponding frequencies, see http://www.moonblinkwifi.com/2point4freq.cfm

The diagram will clearly show how and when the channel radio frequencies overlap.

I downloaded the inSSIDer, and love it. The wifi in our area are two and they are on channel
6 and 11. I have ours set on 1. Previously it was on auto. I'll watch this for a few days to see if the others stay put or move around. This didn't fix the Apple Tiger issue though
so that might require a new airport card.

Hi Michelle,

Yes it is possible to change to a different channel on the wifi router. I have mine set to channel 1. It is best to hop at least two channels (i.e. 1, 3, 5 etc.)

Thanks Ken,

I was using automatic channel selection, also noticed I had low power selected and my
firmware was out of date. Thanks for the motivation to fix things. I've since updated my
firmware, and set channel one to see how it works,  and set the power to high; may download the sugested software at some point but not today.

Hi Michelle,
For 802.11b/g WIFI, the only three 'non-interferring' channels are 1, 6, and 11. Generally, if you pick one of the *other* available channels, you'll get worse performance (i.e.; channel 3 will probably end up getting interference from both channels 1 AND 6). If you have a PC (with a compatible wireless card/adapter), use something like insidder ( http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider ) to see what channels are in use, signal strength, etc to maximize performance / minimize interference.
hth,
Ken

There are several wifi's in our area that I can see on my computer.
What is stopping them from interfering with each other? Aren't they
all on the same frequency?
Thanks in advance,
