Monday, September 27, 2010
Re: [IBWiFi] DROID QUESTIONS~ Fred and Dave
Thanks Dave & Fred. I have joined the SmartPhones group. Please forgive
me for posting this on the wrong group. It was here that I read about the
tethering issue with VZW which is why I posted my question here. My
mistake.
We appreciate your help.

RE: [IBWiFi] DROID QUESTIONS
When you have a Droid, you pay for a data plan.

If you check with PDA, they will tell you that they use the Verizon Data Connection to transmit data. Why shouldnt you pay for what you use?

RE: [IBWiFi] DROID QUESTIONS
I used PDAnet I have no problems with Verizon. I use it for internet everyday now for over a year. I have a MiFi2000 which has a limit of 5 gigs and I have went over on it. I'm waiting for my contract to expire. I love PDAnet. I used it from Florida to South Dakota and back had only one problem in Northern Mo. Were I was cut off. I called Verizon and the tower my phone was on didn't support data. Within an hour I back in range where I was back on line streaming.

Not meaning to be curt, here, but you would get a lot better answers on the
InternetBySmartphone group. Their address is here:
_http://groups.yahoo.com/group/InternetBySmartphone_
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/InternetBySmartphone)
The WiFi group is pretty much dedicated to how to get connected to the 'net
via WiFi.
I am a member of the Smartphone group and therefore read that group's
posts and the pda.net topic keeps coming up, but I have not read of anyone
reporting a problem.

We buy a data plan and modem so we don't tie up one phone all day
with Internet access.

No data limit on a Verizon smartphone. Speed is identical to a
USB data device. They use exactly the same data technology (EVDO
Rev. A).
>Is wifi used or the provider network?
Cellular network.

There is no evidence that Verizon cares, or has ever cared, about
folks tethering their cell phones.
For years, people on these forums have been telling each other to
limit their tethered usage, that Verizon will eventually catch
them, etc. It appears that there is nothing behind these warning
other than baseless speculation. I tethered our last PDA/phone
for two years.
It is technically possible for a carrier to determine whether
traffic is from a tethered phone, whether you use PdaNet,
EasyTether, or simply create a dialup connection with you phone.

[IBWiFi] DROID QUESTIONS
Hi -- We have a new Droid X. We are enjoying it. I have a few questions:
1 - I've been reading that Verizon has issues with the pda.net app. I
read that if they find out a customer has it, they will charge the customer
for data usage. What has been written about this? Where can I read it? Is
this accurate? How can they do this?
2 - I received a photo via text messaging. Is there a way I can transfer
the photo from the Droid onto my laptop? I did not take this photo with
the Droid so it's not on the camera roll.
Thanks to anyone who can help me with these questions.
Happy Trails to you all,
Anne & Maury

[IBWiFi] Will Super WiFi benefit RVers?
The FCC recently approved the use of 'white spaces' - unused gaps in lower frequency spectrum.
As internet service providers (and hopefully some mobile carriers) adopt Super WiFi, remote/rural areas should see some truly remarkable high bandwidth options.
