Buying a router doesn't help you - you need to buy (or beg) access to somebody's wifi so they will allow you to connect through it. If you buy a router (aka wireless access point) , you would still have to buy internet access somehow, e.g. cable internet or DSL phone service.
Or buy a USB cell modem with a data service contract and plug that into your Mac.
