Thanks for the local information, Jon. it doesn't sound like campers are in too much danger. Where is your home base? A neighbor just returned from a business trip to southern Arizona (Bisbee area). He says locals were advising him to avoid driving down isolated unmarked roads which could turn out to be drug stash areas. That seeems to imply Organ Pipe Cactus NM would be OK. We are coming from northern Virginia and will be leaving in early May.
If you are camping at a Casino do you have access to wifi? I can highly recommend the Alfa AWUS036H 1000 MW USB wifi adapter. It can be had on the internet for $40 new (I think from Rockland). It has a detachable antenna so could be used with parabolic dishes, but even without an extra reflector it can pick up nearly 40 APs in my development (some from blocks away). This particular Alfa (has to be this exact one) presently is the preferred adapter by wardrivers, crackers, and those wanting long distance. In my limited tests it makes even newer laptop wifi receivers and all those available at WalMart and Sams look like toys.
