It has nothing to do with the phone brand, Jim. If it's a "smart phone" such as the Blackberry or an LG Chocolate TOuch, it already has a $29.95 data plan for the phone, so they charge you an additional $29.99 to tether it. If you don't have the smart phone plan already, then you pay full price of $49.99.
